Now to the orginal question i think the hit is different, the airhammer is more of a buzzing and the rivet gun is really hitting, also rivet guns have a longer stroke, hope this helps. This was on large aircraft 727,737,757, MD-80 etcc. If i used the rivet gun i would break the tip of the tool off in the screw. I used the air hammer and a lester tool/old man to break out seized screws. A 5X with an amazing trigger for 90% of riveting, and a little tinyone for small detail work and tight spots. I had a 12X to do 3/8 body rivets, and sending freeze plugs home. I did aircraft overhaul for 10 years, i had 3 rivet guns and one air hammer. Thats not to say that an 8X rivet gun cant do a small rivet, you need good trigger control and the bucking bar needs to be well supported etc. Guys that build there own plane use a 3X for 1/8 and below.

Rivet guns are rated in X power, the most common being a 4X, this will do a 3/16 rivet. Maybe that's less important in the smaller sizes. In essence all rivetting hammers could be used as general purpose hammers, but you would struggle with some ordinary hammers to use them for rivetting, mainly because of the poor control over the air supply. Sorry I can't explain the finer details, I could post a pic of a dismantled rivetting hammer but it probably wouldn't tell you an awful lot. Some smaller hammers don't have this, they have a two-diameter piston and rely on porting, and maybe a coil spring, to return the piston. Mine have what I believe is called a 'Boyer spool valve' at the back, which is an annular self-acting air valve. The piston is shuttled back & to by air pressure, at the back of the stroke air is introduced to push it forwards, at the front of the stroke it hits the snap, which is held against the rivet, & a smaller amount of air is introduced in front of the piston to return it. There are two main moving parts, the piston and the 'snap'. 624 Products About Installing Solid Rivets More Solid Rivets Aluminum Domed Head Solid Rivets These rivets are lightweight and have good corrosion resistance. I can only talk about larger rivetting hammers from personal experience, I'm sure the smaller aircraft type must work on the same principles.
